Liz Ford became The College of Wooster's all-time
winningest women's lacrosse coach on Saturday when the
Fighting Scots edged past York College 5-3 during a very
low-scoring match-up played in southeastern Pennsylvania. Ford, in
just her fourth year at the helm of the Wooster program is now
35-14, as she passed up her predecessor, Alison Share, who was
34-12 from 2003-05.
As for Saturday's affair, it marked the lowest scoring game
the Fighting Scots have been involved in since the 1979 season
opener, a 5-2 victory over Kenyon College.
Wooster (2-0) built a 4-0 halftime cushion, behind a pair of goals
from Taryn Higgins.
York (2-5) clawed back into it with two early goals in the second,
which made the score 5-2 with 24:57 to play. However, the two
offenses managed just one more tally and that did not come until
the 4:04 mark.
The stingy effort included strong contributions from defenders Emmy
Cassagnol, Romy Eberle, and Britta Harman among others, as well as
goalie Jamie Dannenberg, who was credited with six saves –
three in each half. Overall, the Spartans got off just 15
shots.
Offensively for the Scots, Higgins finished with three goals,
marking her seventh career hat trick. Carly Carey had a goal and an
assist, Hillary Darragh helped out on two scores, and Nina Dine
accounted for the other goal.
Next on Wooster's spring break slate is a tilt at Washington
(Md.) College (3-1) Tuesday night.
