WOOSTER, Ohio – Hillary Darragh scored a career-high seven
goals during her final regular season appearance at Carl Dale
Memorial Field, leading The College of Wooster women's lacrosse
team to an 18-9 "Senior Day" win against North Coast Athletic
Conference rival Wittenberg University on Saturday. The victory
completes the Fighting Scots' third unbeaten run through the NCAC
(regular season) over the last six years.
The game was close early, but midway through the first half,
Wooster (10-3, 6-0 NCAC) began to build some separation. The
Fighting Scots went from trailing 2-1 at the 20-minute mark to
leading 8-3 with 5:24 on the clock, thanks in part to three goals
from Darragh during a 7-1 run.
Wittenberg (7-5, 3-3 NCAC) cut into the lead by halftime, as a
Tiger goal with just :02 left made it 9-5, however, Wooster put
away any hopes of a comeback via a four-goal run during the opening
8:42 of the second period. That made it 13-5 and Wittenberg never
lowered the deficit to any less than five.
Darragh and fellow senior standouts Carly Carey and Taryn Higgins,
as well as sophomore Nina Dine, combined for all 18 of the Scots'
goals. Darragh's seven scores, which came on 12 shots, boosts her
career point total to 151 (114 goals, 37 assists) – the 12th
in school history to reach the 150 plateau.
Carey tallied a five-point effort, including four goals, and
Higgins netted three goals while assisting on another for four
points. Dine matched Carey's total of four goals.
Defensively, Jamie Dannenberg, yet another of the Scots' six
active seniors, made 10 saves, including seven in the second half,
to preserve the victory.
By virtue of finishing in first-place, Wooster will serve as host
of next weekend's NCAC Tournament. The game times and match-ups
will be announced soon.
