Wooster Advances to NCAC Championship, Opponent Still Not Determined

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into its North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal with Denison University and the top-seeded Fighting Scots maintained a relatively comfortable margin throughout, eventually securing a 13-10 victory Friday afternoon at Carl Dale Memorial Field.

Wooster (11-3) will host the championship game, however, its opponent is still to be determined as Friday's second semi was halted at halftime due to unplayable field conditions. Playing through a steady rain, Kenyon College, the No. 2 seed, scored the last six goals to take a 7-4 lead over Wittenberg University, and the teams will complete their game Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.

The suspension also effects the NCAC championship game, as it is being pushed back a day to Sunday at 2 p.m.

Against fourth-seeded Denison (6-8), the Scots' Carly Carey-led offense went to work early, as the senior standout scored 51 seconds into the action and then fed Hillary Darragh for a goal about a minute later. Becca Worthington netted a short-handed tally for Wooster's first three-goal cushion.

The Big Red notched the game's next two scores and it remained 3-2 until Carey struck for back-to-back unassisted goals just 23 seconds apart around the midway point of the half. Denison would pull within 5-3, only to see Worthington come up with another big play, this time finding an opening in the lower right corner of the net for a goal with just :03 on the clock. That gave the Scots a 6-3 halftime lead.

Forty-five seconds into the second, the Big Red narrowed their deficit to two again (6-4). They also won the ensuing draw control and had an extended offensive possession, but could not convert.

The Scots responded on the other end with a Taryn Higgins goal from the outside, assisted by Darragh. Wooster then grabbed complete control, firing in two more, one by Darragh and one by Eileen Barrer, for a 9-4 cushion.

Denison did make one final push, coming within 10-7 at the 8:15 mark. With Carey on the sidelines due to a second yellow card. Nina Dine stepped up for the Scots, punching in consecutive unassisted goals just 44 seconds apart to all but seal the win.

Carey wound up with a six-point effort on four goals and two assists, while Darragh also posted a hat trick to go with one helper. In addition to her two key goals, Dine recorded an assist.

The Big Red were paced by Cassedy O'Neill's four-goal outburst.

Both goalies played well, especially in the first half. Jamie Dannenberg was credited with 11 saves, including nine during the opening 30 minutes, while helping Wooster to the win and her counterpart, Amanda Wilson, totaled 10 saves, including three in the first stanza.
