The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team found its offensive
stride over the final 36:36 of action Wednesday at Selby Field, as
the Scots outscored Ohio Wesleyan University 15-1 during the span
and cruised to the 20-5 victory in North Coast Athletic Conference
action. Wooster improves its record to 8-3 overall and remains
perfect with a 5-0 mark in league play this spring, while the
Battling Bishops fall to 6-5 and 2-2 in the NCAC.
Wooster opened the second half with three unanswered goals over the
opening seven-plus minutes of the second half, including a pair by
Carly Carey, increasing its advantage to 10-4 with 22:56 showing on
the second-half clock.
The Battling Bishops quelled the storm with a goal just :34 later
by Marlowe Mavian, but Wooster's offense wrapped the game up with
the final 10 goals of the contest, as Wooster's defensive
unit clamped down holding the Ohio Wesleyan attack scoreless over
the final 22:21 in the conference victory.
The two teams exchanged goals four times to open the game, with
Ohio Wesleyan taking the lead only to see Wooster respond each
time.
With 8:36 left in the first stanza, a goal by Ohio Wesleyan's
Hannah Mudge put the hosts up by a 4-3 count, but Wooster answered
with a goal by Hillary Darragh exactly two minutes later knotting
the contest at four. Looking to gain the momentum, Taryn Higgins
converted a free-position shot to give the Fighting Scots a 5-4
lead with 6:00 left in the period.
Not done yet, Wooster added scores by Darragh and Madison Carey in
the final 79 seconds of the half to take a 7-4 lead into the
break.
The Scots' attack was all over Ohio Wesleyan's goal, racking up 33
shots, while their defense limited the Battling Bishops to just 14
attempts. The visitors also capitalized on four of their nine free
position attempts. Carly Carey led the way with a career-high
six-goal performance, including five in the second half, while
Darragh and Madison Carey each added hat tricks. Jill Lee had a
career-high five-point game in the victory with two scores and a
team-best three helpers, while Taryn Higgins and Becca Worthington
both ended their days with two goals.
Also of note, Wooster's Romy Eberle and Amy Denny both
finished with three groundballs and three draw controls, while
Higgins ended the contest with a team-high four draw controls.
Jamie Dannenberg played all 60 minutes in the net for Wooster,
making six saves.
Mudge and Mavian paced the Battling Bishops with two goals apiece,
while Jessica Copeland added one score. Liz Searfos made seven
saves between the pipes in the loss.
Wooster concludes its non-conference play this Saturday with a
contest at Adrian College (9-3). The opening draw control up in
Michigan is scheduled for 4 p.m.
