Carey Caps Comeback, Lifts Wooster Past Denison 10-9

Carly Carey broke through for an unassisted goal with :10 remaining, capping a furious comeback by The College of Wooster as the Fighting Scots scored the last four goals in Saturday's 10-9 victory at North Coast Athletic Conference rival Denison University. Of the last 13 games between the two, seven have now been decided by one goal.

Trailing 9-6 with 13:03 left, Wooster's (7-3, 4-0 NCAC) Britta Harman won a draw control, sprinted down field, and fired in a goal – the first of the junior defender's career. That provided the Scots a big lift of momentum, as a little over a minute later, Hillary Darragh also punched in an unassisted goal.

It remained 9-8 for quite some time, but then Wooster was awarded with a free position and Carey made use of the opportunity, scoring her first goal of the day to tie the game with 3:27 to play.

Denison (3-5, 0-2 NCAC) won the ensuing draw and seemed content to run the clock down for the last shot, however, the Scots' three-time first-team all-NCAC defender Romy Eberle caused a turnover and scooped up the groundball with under a minute to play.

After Wooster successfully transitioned the ball into its offensive end, Carey found herself behind the Big Red goal, circled around, and found an opening above the 'keeper's left shoulder for the game-winner.

The contest featured a series of runs. The Scots started out hot, taking a 5-1 lead, including a pair of conversions by Becca Worthington on free-position shots. Denison fought back with a 4-1 stretch over the final 10 minutes of the first half to go into the break down just 6-5.

The Big Red began the second with four unanswered goals to take a commanding 9-6 lead, only to see Wooster comeback with the final 4-0 run.

Carey, Darragh, and Worthington netted two goals apiece to lead the Scots, who outshot Denison 27-19 and won three more draw controls (12-9). Also of note, Jamie Dannenberg was credited with eight saves and Taryn Higgins registered a game-high five draw controls.

Next, Wooster travels to Ohio Wesleyan University (6-4, 2-1 NCAC) on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. match-up.
