WOOSTER, Ohio – Madison Carey had a career-day, recording nine points on five goals and four assists, and Nina Dine scored five goals as well, leading The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team over Tiffin University, an NCAA Div. II school, 19-11 on Saturday afternoon at a chilly Carl Dale Field.

The Scots (4-3) took control of the game right away, as Clare Nelson-Johnson scored on an assist by Carey one minute into the action, and then Carey added her own goal just 16 seconds later to give Wooster a 2-0 lead. Taylor DeMaio put the Dragons (4-4) on the board moments later, but Wooster responded with goals from Dine and Emily Meyer to push its lead to 4-1 only 5:37 into the game.

Both teams traded goals during the middle parts of the first half, with Jaqueline Wallat making a pair of free-position shots, but a score by Melissa Cooper nearing the break drew Tiffin within two scores (6-4). With only 1:24 remaining until half time, Wooster shocked the Dragons with a three-goal scoring run, as Dine flipped in a difficult shot with her back to the 'keeper, and then Carey and Wallat each added scores in the closing seconds of the half to give the Scots a sudden 9-4 advantage.

Tiffin scored the first two goals coming out of the break to make it 9-6, but that was as close as it would get to catching Wooster. Dine and Carey each scored three more goals apiece during the second half, while Eileen Barrer and Nelson-Johnson poured in the rest, and the Scots turned a 14-10 lead into a 19-11 cushion.

Overall, Wooster earned 10 free-position shots in the game, making five of them, while Tiffin was 3-for-4 in those situations. Also noteworthy, the Scots dominated ground balls 22-7, and held a slight 17-14 advantage in draw controls (17-14), with Katie Smart leading the way with six.

For Carey, her nine points (5 goals, 4 assists) was a career-best, and pushes her team-leading total to 33 points (24 goals, nine assists). Dine totaled six points (5 goals, 1 assist), and both Nelson-Johnson and Wallat recorded hat tricks. On defense, Kari Martyniak stepped in and intercepted a pair of Tiffin passes in the second half that halted potential scoring drives.

Wooster will kick off the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of its schedule Wednesday when they visit Ohio Wesleyan University (2-6, 0-1 NCAC) at 7 p.m.
