Dominant Second Half Lifts Wooster Past Kenyon 12-5

Clare Nelson-Johnson
The Scots' Clare Nelson-Johnson scored on this free-position shot, one of three goals for her on the day.

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster scored the last three goals of the first half and then put forth a dominant effort throughout the second 30 minutes for a 12-5 triumph over Kenyon College Saturday on Andrew Turf Field at John P. Papp Stadium. The game was played on the turf due to heavy rains that moved into the area late Friday and Saturday, but fortunately the wet weather stopped right before game time.

The match-up was a rematch of the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference championship game, which Wooster also won. This time, the Fighting Scots (9-3, 4-0 NCAC) fell behind 4-2 before stringing together seven unanswered goals over a 30-minute stretch, spanning the two halves, to break the game open.

Down by two in the final 10 minutes of the opening half, Clare Nelson-Johnson and Madison Carey each converted free-position shots within a 16-second span to tie it at four. Just under five minutes later, Eileen Barrer scored her second of a five-goal day while putting Wooster ahead for the first time at 5-4.

Barrer and Carey continued to key the Scots' run in the second half, as they each scored a goal during the first five minutes. Then, Barrer assisted on a Cassie Greenbaum tally and Carey netted another free-position attempt for a 9-4 cushion with 18:34 to play.

Kenyon (7-6, 1-3 NCAC), which did not advance the ball into Wooster's defensive end until 19 minutes had elapsed during the second half, snapped its scoring drought with a goal at the 10:13 mark.

Shortly thereafter, Barrer put any thoughts of a Ladies' comeback attempt away when she scored a free-position goal to make it a five-score advantage again (10-5) with 8:31 left.

Barrer's five goals matched a career high set earlier in the season, while the assist elevated her point total to a career-best six. Making it all the sweeter, it was "Senior Day," as Barrer and three classmates (Nina Dine, Emily Meyer, Katie Smart) were recognized for their efforts the last four years prior to the game.

Rounding out the Scots' leaders, Carey and Nelson-Johnson posted hat tricks, Greenbaum added a game-high four draw controls, and Shawna Ferris had a standout game in goal with seven saves and three groundballs.

For Kenyon, Emily Nichols scored twice and Leah Sack had one goal and two assists.

Wooster will be at Papp Stadium again on Thursday night, as it welcomes in Allegheny College (10-5, 2-2 NCAC) for another key conference match-up.
