The College of Wooster held a series of eight-goal leads, including 12-4 with 17:35 remaining, but the University of the South put together a remarkable rally to send Monday's women's lacrosse affair to overtime and eventually won 14-12 at Sewanee, Tenn.

After Sewanee (4-1) netted the game's opening score, Wooster (1-1) rattled off nine in a row, including a hat trick by Madison Carey, for its first eight-goal cushion. The Fighting Scots were ahead 9-2 at halftime.

Less than three minutes into the second, Wooster was up 10-2, thanks to another Carey goal, and later, Clare Nelson-Johnson's third goal of the day provided the visitors a third eight-goal advantage at 12-4.

The Tigers' comeback was fueled by a three-goal spurt over 40 seconds, as it suddenly became 12-7 with 13:20 left in regulation. They continued to chip away at the lead, eventually tying the game at 12 with 3:01 on the clock.

Both squads had chances during the final moments, but a Sewanee free-position attempt sailed wide and a Nelson-Johnson shot was saved right before the horn.

In overtime, the Tigers converted an early free-position shot and added an insurance goal to help complete the comeback.

In addition to Carey, who wound up with four goals and two assists, and Nelson-Johnson, the Scots' Cassie Greenbaum produced a hat trick. The latter also had four groundballs and three caused turnovers, while goalie Shawna Ferris was credited with a career-high 16 saves.

Wooster hopes to bounce back in a neutral-site meeting with Greensboro College (2-4), which will also take place at Sewanee, Tenn., on Wednesday.
