The College of Wooster turned around its slow start and played much better in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome State University of New York at Fredonia, as the Fighting Scots came up short, 7-5, in an unusually low-scoring women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at University Stadium in Fredonia, N.Y.
Only one other time in the last 35 years have the Scots (0-1) been involved in a lower-scoring match-up, and that was in 2009, when then they edged past York College by a 5-3 margin.
The Scots scored just once in the first half, when Shelby Stone tied the game at 1-1 about eight minutes into the action, but Fredonia State (1-0) scored three times during a 1:59-spurt in the middle of the period, and then added one more right before the break to take a 5-1 lead at halftime.
Wooster netted the first two goals of the second half, as Molly Sennett registered her first of the season on an assist from Ashley Parry, and Stone chipped in another to pull the Scots within two at 5-3.
Fredonia State responded, though, scoring two in a row to regain its four-point cushion (7-3). Stone made it interesting late, scoring her third and fourth goals of the game during the closing minutes, but it wasn't enough to catch the Blue Devils in both teams' home openers.
Stone paced Wooster with her four-goal outing, which tied a career-high, while Fredonia State got two goals each from Kaila Fox and Rachael Reinis.
Shawna Ferris set a new career-high with 17 saves.
The Scots were outshot 24-15, and won just 3-of-13 draw controls.
Next, Wooster will host Washington & Jefferson College on Thursday at John P. Papp Stadium at 5 p.m.
