WOOSTER, Ohio – Third-seeded Denison University used a three-goal run late in the second half to build a 13-8 lead and upended The College of Wooster, the No. 2 seed, by a final count of 14-11 during a North Coast Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament semifinal, played under the lights at John P. Papp Stadium Wednesday night.

A pair of Abby Szlachta goals at the 15:54 and 14:28 marks of the second half, sandwiched around one from Denison (10-6), seemed to give Wooster (13-4) a momentum boost as the home team closed to within 10-8. The Scots followed with back-to-back point-blank shots, the first by Mara Sheban and the next by Ashley Parry, however, goalie Becca Jones came up with two big saves.

The second led to a transition opportunity and the Big Red eventually converted on a free-position, when Kelsey Wright flipped to Lizzy Pellicane, who finished the scoring chance to make it 11-8. Under a minute later, Denison netted another on a very similar play, this time with Pellicane feeding Claire Ludlow.

Next, Jones stopped another great look from Wooster, this time a Shelby Stone free-position shot, and on the other end, Pellicane converted for the five-goal cushion with 8:36 to play.

The Scots kept battling, as Ellie Hudson-Heck scored on a nice pass from Parry 27 seconds later, but the Big Red maintained possession much of the last eight minutes.

Wooster did make one last push during the final minute, with Parry and Molly Sennett finding the back of the net just 19 seconds apart to cut the margin to three with :37 on the clock. Sennett won the ensuing draw control, but a turnover at the :21 mark sealed the outcome.

The Scots dug themselves an early 4-1 hole, thanks in part to a series of turnovers during clear attempts. They finished the first half just 6-for-14 in that category, but still found a way to be within one goal at intermission, 6-5.

While Wooster committed less turnovers in the second half and won more draw controls, Denison was able to prevail due in large part to Jones making six of her eight saves.

Hudson-Heck got the ball past Jones, scoring five goals as part of an outstanding all-around game as she also piled up three caused turnovers, four draw controls, and six groundballs. No other Scot player tallied more than two points.

In goal for Wooster, Isabel Perman played well, recording 11 saves, which marked her second-highest total of the season.
