Grossmann’s Last-Second Goal Gives Scots 14-13 Comeback Win over Kenyon

Laura Papp
Jenny Grossmann

Down 13-11 with 9:07 left to play, The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals in the final seven minutes, including two from sophomore Laura Papp and the game-winner from first-year Jenny Grossmann with :02 remaining, to propel the Fighting Scots to a 14-13 comeback victory over Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon at Gambier, Ohio.

Papp finished with a team-high four goals while Grossmann and senior Heath Szymanski both totaled three.

After a back-and-forth opening 15 minutes, the Ladies (4-5, 0-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) broke out a four-point lead behind goals from four respective players before taking a 9-6 advantage heading into the halftime break.

Wooster (7-2, 1-1 NCAC) brought the deficit back to one (8-9) 10 minutes into the second half with goals from Szymanski and junior Michaela Lawrence, who finished with two goals on as many shots.

Kenyon's Allie McLane and Cassie Hudson-Heck responded with a two-goal answer of their own before the Scots posted three straight – all within a 56-second span – with Lawrence and Grossmann scoring on either end of junior Helena Enders to level the match at 11 with 18:32 remaining.

After Grossmann's equalizer, the Ladies brought back a two-goal cushion behind tallies from Hudson-Heck and Kat Englert with just over nine minutes left to play.

Cooler heads prevailed for the Scots, as fouls from the Ladies preceded each of Wooster's next three goals, as did caused turnovers against Kenyon on the initial two, with sophomore Emma Lawrence initiating both and scooping up the groundball on the second while first-year goalkeeper Emma Hambright nabbed the first.

Papp scored on a solo effort to make it 12-13 before getting a helping hand from Grossmann on the equalizer with 2:31 remaining. After a successful clear attempt by Kenyon with 1:31 remaining, an uncaused turnover granted the Scots one final possession, as they took a timeout with :21 remaining.

In the end, it was Grossmann who earned a free position attempt with :02 left before connecting on the ensuing shot opportunity to cap the game-winner and earn the Scots their first conference win of the season.

Emma Lawrence finished with eight caused turnovers, an unofficial single-game program record, to go along with five draw controls and five groundballs, while Michaela Lawrence gathered a game-high six draw controls. Hambright ended with seven saves.

Up next, Wooster hosts NAIA opponent Marian University (5-6) on Wednesday, April 5 at 5 p.m.
