Balanced Offense, High-Pressure Defense Propel Wooster to 17-5 Win Over Marian

WOOSTER, Ohio – Six players scored multiple goals while The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team also had six players with multiple groundballs during a 17-5 non-conference win over Marian College on Wednesday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (8-2) really turned on the jets with just under 24 minutes remaining in the opening half as the Scots netted seven goals in a span of 8:01. Junior Helena Enders opened the scoring of the afternoon and led the way with all of her co-game-high three goals during the eight-minute stretch.

Sophomore Natalie Souleyrette looks to push the ball upfield during Wednesday's 17-5 win over Marian.

Later in the first half, Wooster scored three times in the final 9:44 of the stanza, including sophomore Laura Papp's team-leading 29th goal of the season.

Wooster's defense was equally as impressive in the first half as Scots did not allow a first-half goal for the second time in the last three contests. In Wednesday's game, first-year Emma Hambright turned aside both shots on cage in the initial stanza while Wooster's high-pressure defense caused Marian to turn it over 15 times, three of which were caused by sophomore Megan Healy. In fact, Wooster's intense full-field defense held Marian out of the attacking zone 63.6 percent of the time as the Knights went 4-for-11 on first-half clear attempts.

In the second half, Wooster was back in sync with about 12 minutes remaining as the Scots closed out the game with a 4-1 run, headlined by sophomore Jess Vorse's first collegiate goal.

Enders, first-year Jenny Grossmann, and Papp each recorded hat tricks on the afternoon as Wooster's 17 goals were spread out among eight different players. The Scots tallied assists on nine of their 12 non-free-position goals with Papp and senior Heather Szymanski each dishing out three.

Defensively, Healy led the way with six caused turnovers while Grossmann, Hambright, Healy, and sophomore Emma Lawrence scooped up three groundballs each.

Kori Garland and Julia Robson tallied two goals each for Marian (6-7) and the duo combined for nine draw controls on the afternoon.

Next, Wooster (1-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) hosts Ohio Wesleyan University (4-5, 1-1 NCAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
