Szymanski Joins 100-Goal Club as Scots Fall Victim to Explosive Wittenberg Offense

Heather Szymanski

The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-3 lead midway through the first half, but a 10-0 mid-game run from the Tigers propelled Wittenberg University to a 20-15 victory on Thursday afternoon at Springfield, Ohio.

Attaining a milestone achievement on the day, however, was senior Heather Szymanski, who scored her 100th career goal off a free position attempt with :01 remaining in the game. The senior captain currently leads the team with 38 goals.

Wooster (9-3, 2-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) came out firing from the gate to take a 5-3 lead just over 12 minutes into the game, as a different player tallied each of the Fighting Scots' first five goals.

Wittenberg (9-5, 3-2 NCAC) tied it up with a pair of goals before the Scots responded with a brace of their own, as sophomores Jordan Stone and Laura Papp connected on their respective second tallies of the contest to take a 7-5 lead. From there, the Tigers went on a tear, one that proved too steep to climb back from. Over the ensuing 14:07, and eventually stretching into the second half, Wittenberg posted 10 straight goals as part of a larger 11-2 run to take a 16-9 lead with 22:23 left to play.

Down but not out, Wooster scored four of the next five goals to claw back within four (17-13) with 10:52 left to play. The Tigers' offense did not dissipate, however, as Wittenberg scored twice in response to push the lead back to six (19-13) with over three minutes remaining.

Goals from Papp and Szymanski bookended a tally from Witt's Victoria Zysik as the Tigers held on for a 20-15 victory to overtake Wooster and claim fourth-place in the league standings.

Following Szymanski in the goal department was Papp with three and first-year Jenny Grossmann and Stone, who each had two. First-year goalkeeper Emma Hambright finished with 11 saves.

Up next, Wooster hosts Denison University (8-3, 4-0 NCAC) on Tuesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m.
