WOOSTER, Ohio – A five-goal run as part of a 12-goal first half lifted Denison University to an 18-9 victory over The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team on Tuesday evening at John P. Papp Stadium.

The Big Red (10-3, 6-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) put the pedal to the floor from beginning to end during the opening 30 minutes, scoring just 18 seconds into the game before capping off a 12-5 first-half advantage with a tally at the :46 mark.

First-year Jenny Grossmann totaled a season-best seven groundballs against Denison.

Earlier on, Wooster (9-4, 2-3 NCAC) countered back from a 2-0 deficit on a successful free position shot by sophomore Jordan Stone before goals from Denison's Reid Hirschey and Wooster's Helena Enders made it a 3-2 contest.

From there, the Big Red rattled off five consecutive goals as part of a larger 9-3 run to close the half. For Wooster, senior Heather Szymanski punched in her 39th and 40th goals of the season, while between those, sophomore Emma Lawrence connected on her 13th goal of the season after muscling her way to the front of the cage on a free position attempt.

First-year Jenny Grossmann opened the scoring for the Scots in the second half on the helper from junior Michaela Lawrence, who later scored a mere 42 seconds after teammate Enders to cut back within seven (15-8) just over midway through the second half.

The Big Red rallied, however, with three straight goals before Grossmann tacked on her second of the game on a free position shot after an impressive coast-to-coast ride.

Shot conversion spelled victory for the Big Red, who were actually outshot by Wooster 38-30 but landed 25 of their 30 shots on target, with 60 percent of those counting towards the score sheet.

Meanwhile, Wooster outdid Denison in draw controls 15-14 while committing two fewer turnovers than their counterparts and scooping up a total of 28 groundballs.

Sophomore Megan Healy picked up a team season-high eight groundballs, followed closely by Grossmann's seven, a personal-best. At the draw, both Emma Lawrence and Michaela Lawrence totaled five while Healy posted three caused turnovers.

Denison was led by Claudia Rafi's five goals and Claire Ludlow's two goals and two assists. Ten different players recorded at least two groundballs while nine recorded at least one caused turnover for the Big Red.

In goal, first-year Emma Hambright finished with seven saves.

Up next, Wooster takes a break from league play and travels to Baldwin Wallace University (11-2, 6-0 OAC) on Thursday, April 20 for a 7:30 p.m. showdown.
