WOOSTER, Ohio – With scoring contributions from 10 different players on season-high 40 shots, The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team topped Wittenberg University 15-9 to open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Wooster High School.

The Fighting Scots (5-1, 1-0 NCAC) got after it on the defensive end, too, behind a season-best 18 turnovers. Saturday's win also marked Wooster's first victory over the Tigers since May 2, 2013.

First-year Caitlyn O'Connor opened the game's scoring with her first collegiate tally just under four minutes into the game off the assist from senior captain Helena Enders. The Scots doubled down nearly four minutes later after first-year Alexa Mellis took matters into her own hands with an unassisted tally at the 20:50 mark.

The Tigers (2-8, 0-2 NCAC) responded just over a minute later when Victoria Zysik went solo to halve the deficit at 2-1. Sophomore Jenny Grossmann, who posted one of her most impactful collegiate games with career-bests in points (5) and groundballs (3), brought the Wooster lead back to two near the midway point with her ninth of the season, coming off the pass from first-year Katie Harvey.

Both teams exchanged goals over the ensuing 9:07 to give Wooster a 6-5 lead before the Tigers' Madeline Stock leveled the score at 6-6 with 1:37 remaining. Junior Megan Healy responded, however, corralling the next draw control and taking it all the way to regain the lead at 7-6 entering the halftime break.

Wooster opened the second half on a 4-1 run – the first of two 4-1 streaks for the Scots in the second stanza – capped off by Harvey's lone goal of the game at the 15:49 mark to take an 11-7 lead.

First-year Miura Wiley and senior Michaela Lawrence sandwiched a tally from Wittenberg's Rachel Bernard, all within a 90-second period before junior Emma Lawrence and Healy capped off the game with respective goals at the 5:18 and 3:10 mark.

Healy finished with a career-high six turnovers and junior Megan Myers totaled a career-best six groundballs. In goal, first-year Katie Shideler totaled four saves.

Up next, the Scots travel to Franciscan University of Steubenville (4-1) on Tuesday, April 3 at 5 p.m.
