Six different student-athletes found the back of the net, but The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a slow start during a 20-6 loss to Denison University on Saturday afternoon at Granville, Ohio.
Wooster (6-3, 2-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) fared well in the free-position department, as the Fighting Scots went 3-for-5 as part of an 8-for-12 showing over the last two games. Junior Emma Lawrence buried a free-position shot for the Scots' first goal of the game at the 15:10 mark of the first half. In fact, both of Wooster's first-half tallies came on free-position shots with first-year Ashley Boersma's coming with :27 left in the opening stanza.
First-year Alexa Mellis came out of the gate strong in the second half and scored her co-team-leading 22nd goal of the year less than a minute into the period.
Wooster turned in its most consistent stretch of the game offensively down the stretch as junior Laura Papp, first-year Miura Wiley, and senior Michaela Lawrence all scored as part of a game-closing 3-1 stretch.
Papp, first-year Sydney Schuster, and juniors Natalie Souleyrette and Rose Taylor combined for eight of Wooster's 13 groundballs in the game, while Papp added a team-high two caused turnovers. Other stats to note include five draw controls by Michaela Lawrence.
Leah Israel and Kiely Noonan scored four goals each for Denison (10-2, 5-0 NCAC), and Noonan added six draw controls as part of the winning effort.
Next, Wooster takes on Hiram College (6-6, 0-4 NCAC) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17 at John P. Papp Stadium.
