Wooster Dominates St. Vincent, 22-4

Kenzie Morris, College of Wooster lacrosse WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team averaged nearly a goal a minute in the opening period, then eased up over the final three, during Wednesday evening's convincing 22-4 win over Saint Vincent College at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (4-0) stuffed the stat sheet with 12 first-period goals, and had three instances with consecutive goals less than 30 seconds apart. Junior Jill Murray's team-leading 12th goal of the year opened the night's scoring, and 27 ticks later, senior Caitlyn O'Connor finished a feed from junior Britta Treu. Later, sophomore Ciara O'Connor scored at the 9:00 mark, and 20 seconds later, Caitlyn O'Connor was back in the scoring column, this time finishing a feed from first-year Kenzie Morris. Later in the period, 22 ticks were all Wooster needed for consecutive goals with sophomore Kenzie Smith's score making it a 10-1 game, and Ciara O'Connor's fifth goal of the year upping the lead to 10 at the 2:58 mark. Wooster's longest stretch without a goal in the first was 2:10. Senior Syd Schuster connected at that point to up the lead to 12-1 with :48 on the clock.

Twelve consecutive Wooster goals followed St. Vincent's (1-1) opening score of the night, including the first collegiate score by first-year Ashlyn Casey. Junior Anna Truong etched her name in the scoring column for the first time this season, while first-year Kacy Handzel scored with :20 left in the game for her first collegiate goal. In all 12 Scots scored on the night.

Wooster's defense was just as dominant, holding St. Vincent to six successful clears in 16 attempts. In fact, St. Vincent failed to establish possession in the offensive box on a clear attempt in the first period, and the Bearcats were just 1-for-6 there in the third. First-year Kaitlyn McBride's three caused turnovers were a big reason why St. Vincent finished under 50 percent for the night on clears, and the Scots' dozen marked a season-high. Caitlyn O'Connor scooped up four of Wooster's 30 groundballs, while four other Scots – sophomore Angelina Bolivar, sophomore Molly Kershner, junior Clare Leithauser, and junior Hannah Shaw finished with three apiece.

Morris, Caitlyn O'Connor, and Smith scored three goals apiece, and Truong's two assists marked the most on the night. Elsewhere, Schuster won five draw controls and Shaw was right behind at four.

Joey Smith and Rachel Thatcher scored two goals apiece for St. Vincent. Maggie Edwards had the high marks in draw controls and groundballs and six and five, respectively.

Wooster outshot St. Vincent 36-10, including 19-1 in the first period alone.
