Scots Beat Yeowomen In Overtime Again, This Time on Schuster's Game-Winner

Syd Schuster, Wooster Lacrosse OBERLIN, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team's game at Oberlin College went to overtime for the second straight year, and once again the Fighting Scots emerged victorious on a free-position goal. Senior Syd Schuster delivered Saturday's winner with 4:32 remaining in overtime to give Wooster a 13-12 road victory.

Similar to its 12-11 overtime victory at Trine University on March 23, Wooster (9-1, 1-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) was the side in need of a late score to extend the game. Senior Caitlyn O'Connor put in the game-tying goal with 1:45 to go in the fourth, and that was not far off the 1:37 mark the game-tying tally came at Trine. O'Connor's score marked number 18 for the season.

Oberlin (3-6, 0-1 NCAC) won the opening draw control of overtime and had several chances to win it. Two of Wooster senior CC Dent's 11 saves came in overtime. First, Dent denied Lauren Mills at the 5:15 mark, and later Mills was turned away again. Wooster successfully cleared the ball after Dent's second save, and a Yeowomen yellow cart set up Schuster with the free-position opportunity.

Wooster's draw control dominance was as strong as ever, with junior Hannah Shaw once again leading the charge. The Scots finished with a 21-8 advantage, and Shaw tracked down more than the entire Yeowomen squad at 11. It marked Shaw's fourth game with at least 10 draw controls this spring, and her 84 on the season is now the third-most in program history.

Elsewhere, Schuster's four goals led the Scots, and the senior's contributions extended to the midfield, where she gathered in four draw controls. First-year Kenzie Morris logged the Scots' other six draw controls on the afternoon. Other key stats included a collegiate-best five groundballs by first-year Lexi Sarne and four groundballs and two caused turnovers by junior Clare Leithauser.

Audrey Koren and Emily Shimabukuro scored three goals apiece for Oberlin. Bette Imhoff led a strong defensive unit with eight caused turnovers and seven groundballs. Sophia Ferrantelli's save percentage came in north of 50 percent, thanks to 17 saves to just 13 goals against.

Wooster outshot Oberlin 32-29, but the Yeowomen dominated on groundballs, 36-24. Wooster went 17-of-23 on clear attempts to Oberlin's 19-of-30 showing, and the teams combined for 55 turnovers.

Looking back, alumna Alexa Mellis scored the overtime free-position winner in Wooster's 17-16 win at Oberlin on April 28, 2021.

Next, Wooster's off to Ohio Wesleyan University (9-1, 0-1 NCAC) for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday, April 6.
