Wooster Fails to Take Down Top-Seeded Kenyon

Lillian Miller GAMBIER – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team faced an uphill battle in its attempt to knock off top-seeded Kenyon College from the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday as the fourth-seeded Scots fell 20-8.

The Scots got off to a rough start, allowing the game's first five goals, but fell into a rhythm toward the end of the first quarter.

The sister connection got Wooster on the board as Ciara O'Connor found Caitlyn O'Connor for the score with 1:02 left in the quarter. Kenyon responded but Wooster did the same when senior Syd Schuster scored with four seconds left to play.

Wooster made it a 6-3 game with a quick score to open the second quarter. Junior Hannah Shaw scored with 13:31 on the clock.

Schuster had an opportunity to cut the lead to two with a free position attempt, but her shot went just wide with 12:51 on the clock. From there, Kenyon went on another 5-0 run to open its lead to 11-3.

Schuster stopped the bleeding with a goal with 5:29 left on the clock, but Kenyon would score the next three. Ciara O'Connor then made it a 14-6 game at halftime with a pair of goals to close the quarter just 46 seconds apart.

The Scots scored just two goals in the second half. They went scoreless in the third as Kenyon scored four.

Schuster got back in the scoring column to open the fourth, and first-year Ashlyn Casey scored with 39 seconds remaining.

Keeper CC Dent made 10 saves. Wooster succeeded on 10-of-12 clears and committed just seven turnovers compared to Kenyon's nine.

The Scots are now 6-5 all time against Kenyon in the NCAC Tournament.

Wooster finishes at 13-5. It is their sixth season with 13 or more wins.
