For the second time in four days, The College of Wooster
women's soccer team tripped up nationally-ranked Denison
University in Granville, Ohio, and Wednesday night's 1-0
victory over the No. 19 Big Red earns the Fighting Scots a spot in
the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship
game.
On Saturday, Wooster (14-5), the No. 4 seed, will be at
second-seeded Wittenberg University (10-3-6), which needed penalty
kicks to advance over Allegheny College after a 0-0 tie in
Wednesday's other semifinal.
The Denison-Wooster match also was a defensive struggle, as the two
teams combined for just 17 shots and five corner kicks. It was
scoreless all the way up until 5:14 remained in regulation when
Scot senior forward Kate Kiley was in the right place, rebounding
in a shot by freshman teammate Bri Fulmer. The initial attempt came
from about 30 yards out and hit off the crossbar before Kiley
chipped it in for her ninth goal of the season.
Statistically, it was an evenly played game as Wooster wound up
with a narrow 9-8 edge in shots. Only one of the Big Red's
was on target, as Scot goalkeeper Sara Flannelly was credited with
one save, which came in the 33rd minute. It marked the first career
shutout for Flannelly, a senior making just her fifth career
start.
Wooster will be making its third appearance in the NCAC Tournament
finals with the others coming in 2002 and 2003. Saturday's
starting time is yet to be finalized.
