WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior Kate Kiley scored her team-high
fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 Wednesday
afternoon, but The College of Wooster could not overcome a goal
with just under 15 minutes left in regulation, as Case Western
Reserve University walked away from Carl Dale Memorial Field with a
2-1 triumph in non-conference women's soccer action.
Wooster (6-1) was attempting to get off to its first 7-0 start in
program history, however, Case Western (5-1) wouldn't let
that happen, scoring near the midway point of the opening half off
a corner kick that found the feet of Kristina Vaci, and once again
in the 76th minute following a corner kick on a header by Ana
Arruda.
The Spartans looked like they were going to make the game 2-0, but
Wooster sophomore goalkeeper Alix Hoffman had a diving save on a
shot by Arruda in the 25th minute, keeping the score 1-0 in favor
of the visitors headed to the halftime intermission.
In the second half, Wooster began to put together some offensive
runs, with one of those resulting in Kiley's goal, the eighth
of the senior forward's career. She was assisted by freshman
Bri Fulmer, who sent a ball from the left side of the box to the
far post, and Kiley calmly tapped into the lower-right corner of
the goal.
Defensively for the game, Hoffman had eight saves, including
another diving stop in the 58th minute to keep the score knotted at
1-1. For the Spartans, Kirsten McClain tallied four saves in the
first half, while Anna Kennedy picked up the win along with three
saves during the second.
The Scots will look to start a new winning streak Saturday
afternoon when they'll be in Alma, Mich. to face Alma College
(4-3) at 1 p.m.
