WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's
soccer team was dominant at both ends of the field in its 2008 home
debut Saturday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots shutout visiting
Mt. Union College 3-0 at Carl Dale Memorial Field. Freshman Bri
Fulmer led the Scots' charge with her first two collegiate
goals in the victory.
Wooster (3-0) kept the offensive pressure on right from the opening
whistle. Following some good scoring opportunities, the home team
got on the board first with just over 17 minutes remaining in the
opening half when Fulmer booted in a touch pass from junior Chantal
Koechli following one of the Scots' six corner kicks in the
first half. The helper was Koechli's team-high third assist
of the fall and 11th of her career.
Despite the Scots controlling the majority of the action, it
remained a 1-0 lead at the halftime break. In the second half,
Wooster extended its lead nearly 10 minutes into action with
sophomore Liz Mott's first score of the season and sixth of
her career coming on a through ball off the foot of freshman Maggie
Kehm.
Wooster continued to keep the intensity up, as nine minutes later
Fulmer recorded an unassisted goal from six yards out on a loose
ball in front of the Purple Raiders' net.
Overall, Wooster held a decisive advantage in nearly every
category. The hosts outshot Mt. Union by a 20-2 margin, and tallied
10 corner kicks, while not allowing the visitors one of their
own.
In net, Wooster's Alix Hoffman recorded a save in 69:10 of
action, while Caitlin Zusy finished out the contest. Mt.
Union's (0-2-1) Cayla Ovalle tallied six saves in goal, while
Taryn Vespoint grabbed one save.
The Scots continue their non-conference, five-match homestand this
Wednesday against Marietta College (0-2) at 4:30 p.m.
