McCall Tallies First Career Goal in 4-1 Win Over Hiram

WOOSTER, Ohio – College of Wooster senior defender Kristin McCall recorded her first career goal scoring with :37 left in the second half in a 4-1 victory over Hiram College in North Coast Athletic Conference action Tuesday at Carl Dale Memorial Field. McCall recorded a three-point afternoon notching her second assist this season, and fourth of her career, in the 18th minute of action.

The Fighting Scots move to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Terriers drop to 5-12 and 0-7 in the NCAC. The Scots' victory gives them 12 points via their four victories in conference play, and sit in fifth place, just one point out of fourth place which is a deadlock between both Allegheny College and Ohio Wesleyan University with 13 points. The top-four teams advance to the NCAC postseason tournament.

On a cold and blustery day, Hiram lit up the scoreboard first. Melissa Sharpe turned and lofted a shot from 20 yards out that was just out of the reach of Wooster goalkeeper Alix Hoffman.

The Scots wasted little time responding, as Kelsey Peters was on the receiving end of McCall's assist via a free kick, and calmly booted in her first career goal after collecting the ball, and easing it into the lower right portion of the Hiram net.

Nearly 10 minutes later, a pair of first-year Scot players hooked up to put Wooster ahead by a 2-1 count. Mary Riney worked her way down the left side of the field, and crossed a nifty ball to the feet of Maggie Kehm, who calmly touched it home. Not done yet, Wooster tallied its third goal of the opening stanza in the 42nd minute. Junior Chantal Koechli laced a shot from just outside the box that hit the Hiram crossbar, came back out to the feet of classmate Simone DiSalvo, who was charging in and knocked it in the net. The goal was DiSalvo's second this season, while the helper was Koechli's 10th this fall.

Via the helper of DiSalvo's goal, Koechli continues her ascent up the Wooster all-time laurels. She moved her way into a third-place tie for assists (10) in a single season with Erin Lustic ('06), and the helper gives her 18 career assists, good for a tie for fifth-place on the all-time list with Melissa Eging ('97).

After outshooting the Terriers 10-2 in the first half, the Scot offense quieted down in the second period. However, Wooster still managed one goal via McCall's unassisted tally, and possessed a decided advantage in shots (27-4) and corner kicks (12-2) over the Terriers.

Hoffman picked up the victory in goal for the Scots and didn't record a save over the first 87:46 of action, while Sara Flannelly played the final 2:14 without seeing a shot.

Wooster concludes the regular season portion of its schedule for a key NCAC showdown when it travels to No. 12-ranked Denison University (13-2-1, 6-0-0 NCAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
