The College of Wooster ended up on the short end of a 3-2
decision during a back-and-forth battle with Wittenberg University
Saturday afternoon, as the visiting Tigers made a goal during the
77th minute hold up for the North Coast Athletic Conference women's
soccer win.
Wooster (8-3, 0-1 NCAC) struck first when Chantal Koechli turned a
ball at midfield into a breakaway score in the 25th minute. It
marked her fifth goal of the season. Wittenberg (6-2-4, 1-1-0 NCAC)
gained a significant momentum boost at the end of the first stanza,
with Suzanne Medwid converting a penalty kick just 13 seconds
before the break.
The Tigers took the lead for the first time 7:25 into the second
on a shot that was initially saved by Fighting Scot goalkeeper Alix Hoffman, but then Emily Murray booted the rebound back in. The
score remained 2-1 until a Wooster corner kick, sent in by Koechli,
resulted in a Liz Mott goal following a scramble in front of the
Wittenberg net during the 70th minute.
Soon after, Mott almost gave the Scots the lead as another one of
her shots hit the crossbar and deflected straight down, but not
over the goal line before it was cleared out by the Tiger defense.
Not long after that near miss, Wittenberg was on the attack and
Megan Utter booted in what turned out to be the game-winner,
assisted on a cross from the left by Maggie Amorello.
Overall, Hoffman came up with five saves, while her counterpart,
Jordan Bamberger, tallied four.
Wooster will try to shake off its two-game losing skid on
Wednesday when it hosts Allegheny College at 4:30 p.m.
