Rally Falls Short Against Allegheny, as Scots Suffer 2-1 Setback

WOOSTER, Ohio – A late charge by The College of Wooster women's soccer team fell just short Wednesday, as Allegheny College pulled out a 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference victory at an overcast Carl Dale Memorial Field.

Wooster (8-4, 0-2 NCAC) was trailing 2-0 with less than six minutes remaining in regulation when sophomore forward Liz Mott made a run down the left side, beat her defender, and crossed it to senior linemate Kate Kiley, who was stationed at the far post. Kiley knocked it in for her team-leading sixth goal at the 5:38 mark.

The Fighting Scots continued to mount offensive pressure during the final minutes, even earning a corner kick with about :30 to go, but were unable to put any shots on goal.

Allegheny (4-7-1, 1-1-0 NCAC) scored its first tally fairly early on. In the 12th minute, Alex Gordon had a throw-in from the right sideline, in which she found Jesselyn Terrill in the box. Terrill, in turn, headed the ball further into the box, where Molly Waggoner let it bounce to her before lifting the ball to the upper right, glancing off Wooster goalie Alix Hoffman's gloves and into the net.

The Scots' best scoring opportunity of the first half came less than a minute later, as Kiley fired a shot that was deflected by a defender and it was still on target until the Gators' goalie, Emily Karr, swatted it away while fully extended to her left.

During the 38th minute, an Allegheny free kick by Abby Silvester hit the crossbar.

Wooster had a quality scoring chance early in the second half. Nicole Himebaugh dribbled in close from the right side, crossing it left, but the ball slid harmlessly in front of the net, as neither squad was able to put a foot on it.

It remained 1-0 until the 80th minute when the Gators emerged with a three-on-one breakaway. Dribbling down the left side, Ashley Miller sent a pass over to Georgia Frost, who was challenged by a charging Hoffman. Frost got just enough on the ball, as it was tipped by Hoffman and then slowly rolled into the net before a Scot defender could clear it.

For the game, Hoffman and Karr finished with four saves apiece.

Wooster, now on a three-game losing skid, will look to get back on track Saturday at Earlham College (9-2, 1-0 NCAC).
