Scots Combine to Outscore Opponents 7-1 in Winning Penn State Behrend Tourney

The College of Wooster women's soccer team kicked off 2008 with a pair of dominating victories, cruising past the State University of New York at Geneseo 3-0 on Saturday and Penn State Behrend 4-1 Sunday afternoon to win the Herb Lauffer Tournament in Erie, Pa.

While Wooster (2-0) put up seven goals on the scoreboard, its backfield was equal to the task throughout the weekend, and for her efforts, senior defender Kristin McCall was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Against SUNY Geneseo, one of McCall's senior backfield mates, Taryn Higgins, made an early impact on the offensive end, scoring a goal – the first of her career – in the fifth minute on a corner kick. The game remained 1-0 until a pair of Fighting Scot forwards teamed up for a score early in the second, as Kate Kiley converted on a pass from Liz Mott. Freshman Nicole Himebaugh would go on to add an insurance goal during the 71st minute.

On Sunday, Wooster scored a pair of goals exactly two minutes apart midway through the first half to stake out to a 2-0 lead. Kiley notched the first after receiving a pass from freshman Mary Riney and junior Chantal Koechli booted through a cross from Himebaugh for the second.

The host Lions made things interesting with a score a little over 20 minutes into the second half, but just 12 seconds later, the Scots answered via first-year Caitlin Browne's initial collegiate goal, assisted by classmate Kelsey Peters. Wooster sealed the victory when senior Sara Dresser found the back of the net via a corner kick from Koechli in the 70th minute.

In addition to McCall's standout defensive play, sophomore Alix Hoffman started both games in goal for the Scots, producing seven saves over 160-plus minutes of action.

Wooster begins a five-game homestand this Saturday when it welcomes Mt. Union College (0-1-1) to Carl Dale Memorial Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
