Liz Mott scored two goals, including the game-winner with 5:38
remaining during the second overtime, to key a 3-2 victory for The
College of Wooster at Kenyon College Saturday afternoon. The win
enhances the Fighting Scots' chances of qualifying for the
North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, as they move up to
fifth-place with two regular seasons remaining. The top-four
advance to the postseason.
Mott's game-winner came on a breakaway, dribbling past the
defense toward the right post and then shooting the ball left past
the 'keeper for her team-high eighth goal of the year.
Wooster, now 11-5 overall, took a 1-0 lead late in the first half
when Kenyon (5-9-1, 2-3-1 NCAC) was unable to clear the ball out of
its end and Nicole Himebaugh one-touched it over the goalkeeper for
her third goal.
The Ladies, playing their final home match of the season, knotted
things up for the first time during the 55th minute, as Shanna
Keown set up a Lisa Vaughn goal.
It remained 1-1 deep into the second half. Mott gave the Scots what
appeared to be a comfortable cushion, rebounding in a ball in the
Kenyon box at the 6:14 mark. Just 1:37 later, though, the
Ladies' Katie Fee tied it again after booting one in from a
scramble in front of the Wooster net.
The match marked the Scots' first overtime game this fall,
but they responded well, putting two shots on goal, one in the
first and then Mott's game-winner in the second.
Defensively, Alix Hoffman was credited with two saves during the
victory.
Wooster will continue its postseason push on Tuesday when it hosts
Hiram College (5-11, 0-6 NCAC) at 4 p.m.
