Scots Suffer a Case of Déjà Vu at Wittenberg

In eerily similar fashion to the teams' North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship game from a year ago, The College of Wooster lost a heartbreaker Saturday at Wittenberg University as the Tigers scored in the waning moments of double overtime for the match's lone goal.

While it may not have been quite as disheartening as seeing its 2008 season end 1-0 in double overtime on an own goal with 1:13 remaining, Saturday's setback for Wooster was still tough. The Scots (8-1-3, 0-1-0 NCAC) were looking to get off on the right foot in conference play and trying to extend their longest unbeaten streak to start a season, and they appeared to be headed to a tie.

In the 110th minute, though, Sheryl Chambers was able to get to a through ball from Erin McLeish and the former chipped the ball over Wooster's charging 'keeper and it nestled into the net as they collided near the top of the box. The score came with just 0:28 left on the clock.

Prior to that final push by Wittenberg (7-1-3, 2-0-0 NCAC), the Scots had controlled much of the second extra session, taking three attempts while holding the Tigers without a shot. Two of Wooster's runs into the box resulted in high-quality looks from Chantal Koechli and Liz Mott, but they both sailed high.

Despite the last-second goal, Scot freshman goalie Michele Ring had one of her best showings to date with a season-high eight saves, while her counterpart, Melissa Gartner, made two to preserve the shutout.

Wooster will look to start a new unbeaten streak Wednesday night at Allegheny College (8-3, 1-0 NCAC).
