2-0 Shutout of JCU Gives Wooster Its Longest Unbeaten Streak to Start a Season

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's soccer team scored early in each half during its 2009 home debut on Wednesday afternoon, which was enough for a 2-0 triumph over fellow northeast Ohio school John Carroll University at Carl Dale Memorial Field.

With the win, Wooster has now produced its longest unbeaten streak to start a season at 7-0-2, with its previous best opening without a loss coming in 2004 (7-0-1).

In the ninth minute, the Fighting Scots' Nora Simon took advantage of a ball that had deflected off a defender, and from her position on the left wing, sent it into the back of the net for her initial goal of the season. Simon nearly scored again about 90 seconds later, but hit the crossbar.

John Carroll (2-5-1) had a couple of quality scoring chances later in the opening half. During the 13th minute, Elizabeth Daigler fired a shot from the top of the box, however, Wooster goalkeeper Michele Ring was able to punch it over the crossbar at the last second. Midway through the half, there was a big scramble in front of the net, in which the Blue Streaks took a pair of attempts, but neither found their target.

Wooster gained the two-goal cushion 4:05 into the second when Maggie Kehm drove the right end line and sent a perfectly-placed cross over to Paige Piper, who tapped it in at the left post. Piper, a freshman, now leads the Scots in scoring with 10 points (4 goals, 2 assists).

Ring and the defense closed out the shutout with a little help from the crossbar on an attempt by Rachel Grdina in the 79th minute. Overall, Ring totaled five saves.

The Scots will look to continue their winning ways Saturday when Misericordia University (2-5) visits for a 1 p.m. game, as part of Wooster's Homecoming weekend.
