Scots Score Eight Times, Then Need Just One to Win Marietta Classic

The College of Wooster went on a historical scoring spree on Saturday while tallying an 8-2 win over St. Vincent College, and then against Marietta College Sunday afternoon, the Fighting Scots would need just one goal – a penalty kick in the 81st minute – to top the host school 1-0 in the championship game of the 2009 Marietta Soccer Classic.

Despite dominating Marietta in shots (26-2) and corner kicks (12-2), it wasn't until a hand ball in the goal box that gave Wooster the shot it needed to win the game. Senior Chantal Koechli blasted the awarded penalty kick into the back of the net with 9:14 remaining, and the Scots held on for the victory. Koechli recorded two goals over the weekend and was named the tournament's MVP.

Wooster took a different approach versus St. Vincent Saturday as it converted on eight of 30 shots, a scoring clip that the Scots have not seen since a 9-0 win over Alma College on Sept. 11, 1999.

Koechli began the offensive onslaught in the game's 14th minute, giving Wooster a lead that it would not relinquish. Over the next 20 minutes, Paige Piper, Liz Mott, and Kelsey Peters each tacked on goals to put the Scots comfortably ahead at 4-0. St. Vincent got on the board in both the 41st and 46th minutes to cut the deficit to two.

Maggie Kehm would get involved in the action, assisting on Mott's second goal, and then scoring one of her own over a three-minute span in the second half, which gave Wooster an insurmountable 6-2 advantage. First-year players Maggie Roberts, who scored on a corner kick, and Taylor Morgan, recorded their first collegiate goals to close out the scoring.

Mott, Peters and Bri Fulmer joined Koechli on the all-tournament team.

The Scots will go on the road to battle Washington & Jefferson College on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
