WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster looked in midseason form in its season-opener Friday, as the Fighting Scots thoroughly outplayed The College of Mount St. Joseph on their way to a 5-0 victory in non-conference women's soccer action at Carl Dale Field.

The Scots (1-0) peppered the Lions (0-1) with shot attempts throughout the first half, but were only ahead 1-0 with minutes remaining before the break, until Crystal Chavez broke the game open with a pair of impressive goals just 2:09 apart.

Her first goal came in the 42nd minute, when she got loose just inside the 18-yard box and bent a left-footed shot around the goalkeeper. Then in the 44th minute, Chavez pulled the 'keeper out with some nifty footwork, and then pushed the ball by her to put Wooster ahead 3-0 at the game's halfway point.

The Scots scored two more times in the second half, as Katherine Tuttle headed in a goal off a free kick from Kyrsten Kamlowsky, and in the game's closing moments, Kennedy Payne took the ball from near midfield all the way to the other end and found an opening in the top-right corner of the net for her first-career goal.

It was first-year Kathleen Kalafatis that initially gave Wooster its lead, as she scored on an assist from Jessica Friesen around the 10-minute mark of the first half.

Wooster wasn't tested much on the defensive end, as Mount St. Joseph recorded just three shot attempts compared to the Scots' 23. Freshman Sydney Hanzlik drew the start in goal and played 70:32 before giving way to classmate Elizabeth Clark.

Next up, the Scots visit Washington & Jefferson College in another non-conference tilt Sunday at 6 p.m.
