Wooster Closes Season With Another Tie, 2-2 Against Allegheny

Goal celebration
Wooster celebrates a goal by Jessica Friesen (No. 13) early in the second half of Wednesday's action.

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster needed a win to stay in contention for a spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament and appeared to be in good position to do so, only to see Allegheny College rally for a goal late in regulation, and the teams settled for a 2-2 tie on Wednesday afternoon at Carl Dale Field.

The tie was a familiar result for Wooster (8-6-4, 3-2-3 NCAC), as three of its final five games ended in a deadlock.

The Fighting Scots scored early when Allegheny's (9-5-3, 5-1-1 NCAC) goalkeeper attempted to clear a ball, but her kick deflected off the back of a charging Katherine Tuttle and Crystal Chavez was right there to slide the loose ball into an empty net in the seventh minute. It marked Chavez's third goal of the season, first since striking for two in the opener.

There were few scoring opportunities for either side the rest of the half, as it remained 1-0.

Early in the second, Tuttle delivered a long cross from the left wing into the right side of the box, where Jessica Friesen settled the ball and re-directed it inside the far post for a 2-0 advantage in the 51st minute. That was Friesen's fourth goal of the year and Tuttle's team-leading fourth assist.

The two-goal lead did not last long, as about four minutes later the Gators' Jessie Thiessen made a nice individual play, dribbling down the right side and somehow scoring off a tough angle, shooting from near the end line to the far post.

Wooster maintained a 2-1 lead until with the clock ticking down Allegheny's Lauren Miller served a well-placed, right-to-left cross into the box and Hannah Zangara headed it just out of the reach of Scots' goalie Carly Eppler.

Both defenses excelled during the overtimes, as the 'keepers were not challenged. The only shot of the first extra session came off the foot of Wooster's Gabi Morrison. The Scots also had a corner kick during the second, but were unable to get an attempt off, and the Gators took a pair of late shots that were well off target.

Eppler wound up with seven saves, as the first-year 'keeper appears to be a bright spot moving forward. After an injury, she started the last four games and produced an .870 save percentage.
