WOOSTER, Ohio – Junior midfielder Lauren Hancher scored one goal and assisted on another, leading The College of Wooster past Washington & Jefferson College 2-1 in a non-conference women's soccer match-up late Wednesday afternoon at Carl Dale Field.

Hancher took the first shot of the game during the fourth minute, and in the ninth, she notched an assist on the opening score. She gained possession in Washington & Jefferson's (1-4) defensive half, sent a short pass left to Lily Mohre, whose shot from about 20 yards out hit the crossbar and deflected downward into the goal. It was Mohre's third goal this season.

Wooster (5-2) maintained the 1-0 lead throughout the remainder of the first half, with Elizabeth Clark recording three saves in goal.

Clark's best stop of the game came moments into the second half, as she came sliding out to turn away a Tatiana Ruzzini run into the box.

Later, Hancher went on the offensive, firing off four shots in about a nine-minute stretch. She was denied on one by the Presidents' outstretched 'keeper, Morgan Kinyon, who dove to her left. Shortly after, Hancher dribbled up field, kept possession while being challenged by multiple defenders, and buried a shot into the lower right for a 2-0 cushion in the 66th minute.

Washington & Jefferson answered with a Ruzzini goal, assisted by Megan Ochsenreiter, in the 69th minute.

While it was a one-goal game the rest of the way, the Presidents never threatened to put in the equalizer as the defensive line, consisting of Brenna Coolbaugh, Rachael Davis, Carly Joliat, and Liz Kantra, held the visitors without a shot the final 20 minutes.

The Fighting Scots will take on another western Pennsylvania school this Saturday afternoon, traveling to Geneva College (1-4).
