WOOSTER, Ohio – Despite several near-misses and exciting opportunities for both teams, only one goal was scored in a North Coast Athletic Conference tilt between The College of Wooster and Denison University, as the Big Red netted the game-winner in the 78th minute to get past the Fighting Scots, 1-0, in cold and wet conditions Saturday afternoon at Carl Dale Field.

Denison (9-5-0, 3-2-0 NCAC) certainly had more chances, outshooting Wooster (8-6-1, 2-2-1 NCAC) by a large margin overall, but the amount of high-quality looks were about equal.

The first came around 20 minutes into the game on a Denison corner kick. The Big Red sent the ball into the box, where another player put a header on goal that would have beaten the 'keeper, however, Carly Joliat was positioned along the goal line and cleared the ball away.

Two more close calls came just before halftime. One was when Sophia Garfinkel collected a loose ball and blasted a shot towards the upper right corner of the net, only to see Denison's goalkeeper make a leaping save. Moments later, Elizabeth Clark made a diving save to her right to push away a hard shot by Denison's Andrea Witte, but another Denison player was there to collect the rebound and boot it into the net. The goal was negated by an offside call, though, which kept things scoreless at the break.

Midway through the second half, Joliat, about 40 yards away from the goal on the left sideline, switched fields with a high-arching pass to the right post, where Lily Mohre just missed converting a header that would have put Wooster ahead by one.

Finally, the Big Red lit the scoreboard at the 77:56 mark, when Witte crossed the ball to Anne Denz, and the latter came through for the game's lone goal to decide the outcome.

Clark made eight saves, a new career-high, while her counterpart Jenny Herold totaled three.

Now with just three more games to go in the regular season, Wooster will visit Oberlin College (9-4, 2-1 NCAC) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
