Defense Stellar Again as Wooster Posts Sixth Shutout of Season

 Carly Joliat
 Carly Eppler

The College of Wooster women's soccer team's defense has been nearly flawless this season, and led by seven saves from junior Carly Eppler, that continued on Wednesday night as the Fighting Scots emerged from Washington & Jefferson College with a 1-0 win.

It was Wooster's (5-1-1) fourth-straight shutout and sixth in seven games this year.

Washington & Jefferson (3-1-1) tested the defense and Eppler right away with a shot in the first minute and a corner kick in the second minute, but the Scots held off the early barrage.

Senior Carly Joliat provided the evening's lone offense in the 44th minute. Wooster's corner kick specialist put one in when the Presidents' goalkeeper was unable to field the corner attempt cleanly.

Washington & Jefferson attempted to rally right back, challenging Eppler twice in the final seconds of the opening stanza. The Scots' goalie came up with both of those stops, then three more in the second half to preserve another shutout.

Wooster's defense held fast down the stretch, warding off four corner kicks during the final five minutes.

The Presidents finished with an 11-5 edge in shots in the defensive battle.

The Scots, who checked in at No. 8 in the first National Soccer Coaches Association of America Div. III Great Lakes regional poll, return home to take on Wilmington College (3-3) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
