Wooster Wins Conference Opener for Fourth-Straight Year

 Sadie Norton
 Devin Frisby

A first-half goal combined with strong, collective defensive effort led to a 1-0 shutout for The College of Wooster women's soccer team over host Hiram College on Saturday afternoon at Henry Field. The win marked the fourth-straight year the Fighting Scots have won their North Coast Athletic Conference opener.

First-year Sadie Norton scored her fourth goal of the year in the 33rd minute off the feed from fellow first-year Devin Frisby. Norton was able to slide her shot past Hiram goalkeeper Kailie Reed from 15 yards out.

Wooster (7-2-1, 1-0-0 NCAC) had plenty of chances early before Norton connected. First-year Harper Jones led the charge with three shot attempts and nearly connected in the 25th minute when her attempt clanged off the crossbar.

Fighting Scot goalkeeper Carly Eppler turned away two shots in the first half, the only two attempts on goal Hiram (3-6, 0-1 NCAC) had in the contest. The shutout marked the eighth this year for Wooster.

The Terriers had one final opportunity to tie the match in the 89th minute when they were awarded a corner kick. Hiram's Kristen Verel sailed her shot attempt wide, allowing the Scots to clinch the victory.

Wooster had an 11-6 edge on shots and a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Scots return home for their next three matches, the first against Marietta College (0-9) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Pioneers are the sixth team Wooster will square off against this year from the Ohio Athletic Conference.
