Regionally-Ranked Scots Tripped Up by Ladies, 2-0

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster, ranked No. 5 in this week's NCAA Div. III Great Lakes coaches' poll, outshot Kenyon College 16-7, but wound up on the short end of a 2-0 decision as the Fighting Scots took their first North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Carl Dale Field.

Wooster (9-3-1, 2-1-0 NCAC) held possession through the majority of the opening five minutes, earning a pair of corner kicks and getting one shot off, only to see Kenyon (8-5, 2-1 NCAC) grab the momentum on its first shot of the game. During the 10th minute, Gillian Blackwell headed a ball into the left side of the box, where Emma Klug fired a shot that deflected off a defender and into the upper right of the net for a goal.

The Ladies also scored on their second attempt, which came in the 24th minute. Heather Pacheco crossed a ball to the top of the box, where the ball was again touched by a Scot, but Blackwell settled it and sent a quick strike inside the right post to make it 2-0.

Lauren Hancher
Lauren Hancher helped Wooster dominate possession from her midfield spot, but the Scots were unable to overcome Kenyon's early scores.

During the 40th minute, Wooster missed out on a golden chance to make it a one-goal margin. Lauren Hancher delivered a through ball to a teammate who then had a one-on-one opportunity with the Kenyon 'keeper, however, her shot went wide.

Behind on the scoreboard, the Scots moved up the field and pressured the Lords' defensive half throughout the second half, owning an 11-3 advantage in shots. Among the best attempts was a long drive by Liz Kantra in the 62nd minute that forced the goalie into a jumping save, back-to-back shots off the foot of Kennedy Payne midway through the half, and a deep run into the box by Lissette Torres that was covered up by the 'keeper in the 89th minute.

Wooster will look to bounce back on Tuesday when it heads to No. 8 ranked Denison University (11-1, 3-0 NCAC) for a night match.
