Strong Second Half by Brockport Drops Wooster in Consolation Match

Maddy Ireton

The College of Wooster women's soccer team kept it a scoreless draw throughout the first half despite a barrage of offensive threats, but a pair of second-half goals proved too much for the Fighting Scots as they lost 2-0 to The College at Brockport (N.Y.) in the consolation match of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Erie, Pa.

Wooster (1-2-0) stood firm defensively in the first 45 minutes as Brockport (1-1-0) fired off 12 shots in the opening period. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Ireton earned her first start of the season, recording seven saves on the game, including six in the first half.

Claire Davis, Anna Hartig and Kennedy Payne each recorded a shot for the Scots.

In the second half, Brockport's Stefanie Drago quickly got her team on the scoreboard, netting a low-kept strike past Ireton and into the corner to take a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

The Scots stayed within striking distance, however, earning three corner kicks in the second half as Wooster tried to draw level, but each crossing attempt was cleared from danger by the defense.

In the 67th minute, Brockport gained an insurance tally as Sabrina DeBellis doubled her team's advantage with a one-touch volley off a cross to help secure the consolation match win.

Wooster next plays at John Carroll University (0-2-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m.
