Caroline Dres

The College of Wooster women's soccer team battled from a goal down to force extra time before succumbing to a last-minute heartbreaker in the 118th minute as John Carroll University earned the 3-2 edge in Wednesday's contest at Don Shula Stadium.

Wooster (1-3-0) got off to a great start as senior forward Kathleen Kalafatis finished on a pass from first-year forward Krenare Rakoci to opening the scoring.

The Scots would hold on to a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

After a quick shot on goal from senior forward Kennedy Payne to open the second half, John Carroll's Bailey Fischer turned with the ball, pinging a pass to teammate Jaclyn Audino who fired it past Wooster goalkeeper Carly Eppler to tie the match at 1-1 in the 46th minute.

In the 66th minute, John Carroll would take the lead after Andrea Regrut found the feet of Taylor Newhart, who placed it past well for a 2-1 John Carroll lead.

Down but not out, Wooster sophomore Caroline Dres brought the Scots back to level terms, connecting on a shot in the 81st minute to bring the score even at 2-2.

Eppler stayed busy between the pipes, logging 10 saves in regulation, including two in the final minute with the second one coming with approximately three ticks left on the clock.

John Carroll (1-2-0) outshot Wooster 3-1 in the first 10 minutes of overtime, but the Scots' defense held firm to force double overtime.

After a shot on goal from Rakoci in the 117th minute, John Carroll turned on the counter attack as Audino fired a shot past Eppler for the game-winning goal and brace in the 118th minute.

John Carroll finished with 30 shots total, including 15 in the second half.

Wooster recorded eight shots on the day and Eppler finished the game with 12 saves.

The Scots are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. as they face Washington & Jefferson College (2-0-0) at Carl Dale Field.
