Strong First Half by Heidelberg Proves Too Steep for Scots

Kennedy Payne

The College of Wooster women's soccer team battled back to within one goal of Heidelberg University after conceding three in the first half, but the deficit proved too steep as the Fighting Scots fell 4-2 on Tuesday evening at Tiffin, Ohio.

Heidelberg (3-1-2) got on the scoreboard early as Erica Campbell cut in from the right flank, whipping a shot in from the top of the 18-yard-box past Wooster goalkeeper Carly Eppler to give the 'Berg at 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute.

After a Wooster (2-4-1) foul in the 38th minute, Heidelberg's Moloney Darby delivered a ball after the restart to Abigail Callahan, whose deft touch in traffic facilitated the put-away as Heidelberg doubled its advantage on Callahan's first goal of the year.

Callahan did not have to wait long for her second of the season after finishing on a cross from Sydney Harrington to make it a three-goal advantage in the 41st minute.

The Scots did not bow out easy, however.

In the 54th minute, senior Kennedy Payne got Wooster on the scoreboard, finishing on a feed into the box from sophomore Harper Jones for her first tally of the season to make it a 3-1 game.

Ten minutes later, Wooster sophomore Erica White led the ball in transition on a Scots counter attack, connecting on a strike and rifling it past Heidelberg 'keeper Alexandra Farmer, cutting the deficit down to one 26 minutes remaining.

Once again, a foul on Wooster in its own defensive third spelled trouble for the Scots, as Heidelberg's Maddy Hines scored from 24 yards out off a restart in the 81st minute for an insurance tally, as the Student Princes kept the 4-2 advantage through the final whistle.

Wooster managed 20 shots on the day, including 15 coming on frame. Heidelberg finished the match with 16 total shots with 11 on target.

Seniors Kathleen Kalafatis and Payne led the Scots with four shots each, while Eppler finished with seven saves.

The Scots are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to play Wilmington College (1-1-2) at 2:30 p.m.
