Three-Goal Second Half Lifts Wooster Over Hiram in Conference Opener

WOOSTER, Ohio – Down a goal in the second half to Hiram College, The College of Wooster women's soccer team rallied for a resounding 3-1 victory over the Terriers as both teams opened North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Carl Dale Field.

Coming into today having lost three-straight non-conference games, the Fighting Scots (3-6-1, 1-0-0 NCAC) tallied goals from senior Kathleen Kalafatis, first-year Claire Davis, and sophomore Caroline Dres, with all coming in the second half, to open the conference slate with a win.

Sophomore Caroline Dres settles a ball during Wooster's 2-0 win against Hiram. Dres scored in the 71st minute to give the Fighting Scots a 3-1 lead.

It did not come easy, however, as the Terriers took the lead in the 13th minute.

Hiram's Katelyn Mauch opened the scoring with a 15-yard strike off the assist from teammate Allie Glatt.

Despite outshooting Hiram 7-6 in the opening 45 minutes, Wooster trailed 1-0 going into the halftime break.

As expected, Wooster came out attacking in the second half, looking for the equalizer.

Wooster leveled in the 52nd minute, as Kalafatis put away a cross from sophomore Emma Lawrence, who sent one into the box from 30 yards out.

With the momentum boost, the Scots pulled in front after a perfectly-led ball from sophomore Erica White found a streaking Davis, who took a go-ahead touch past the lagging defender for an easy one-on-one finish against the 'keeper.

With perhaps the most impressive goal of the day, Dres made it a 3-1 Wooster lead in the 71st minute with a beautiful far-post curler after winning the ball on an attempted Hiram defensive clearance.

Notable, the Scots have won five-straight conference openers.

Kalafatis, Davis, and White are now tied for the team-lead in points with five, while nine Wooster players have made the scoring column this year.

Davis finished with a team-high four shots as the Scots outshot Hiram 14-10.

The Scots return to Carl Dale Field on Tuesday as they get set to face off against Muskingum University (3-5-0) at 5:00 p.m.
