Bishops Wins NCAC Battle

Naomi Mann The College of Wooster women's soccer team lost to Ohio Wesleyan University 3-2 on Saturday in the team's regular season home finale.

Wooster (10-2-3, 2-2-1 NCAC) could not have gotten off to a better start, scoring in the third minute to take an early lead. Senior Grace Gascoigne found classmate Naomi Mann, who scored her ninth of the year on a strike from outside the box.

However, Ohio Wesleyan (9-5-2, 4-1-0 NCAC), who currently leads the North Coast Athletic Conference standings, capitalized on a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.

On Ohio Wesleyan's first goal, the Bishops benefited from a free kick as Tiffany Trinh's attempt struck the crossbar, which allowed Madison Cofer to score off the rebound with a header.

That tied the game in the 20th minute.

They took the lead in the 40th minute on a goal from about 25 yards out from Ali Claus as she scored off a pass from Hallie Dacek in the defensive midfield.

Wooster tied it early in the second half in the 52nd minute as Mann found Mary Sirois who headed the ball in following a corner. It was the senior's first goal of the season and her second off her career.

Ohio Wesleyan came back with a header of their own in the 67th minute on what would be the eventual game winner as Cofer scored again, her fifth of the season, off a corner kick assisted by Trinh.

Wooster had a couple of prime opportunities down the stretch to tie it up. In the final five minutes both Hallie Krzys and Mann had shots saved by Bishops keeper Natalie Ryan.

Ryan earned the win with six saves.

Wooster split goalkeepers. Sophomore Kameryn Nelson made three saves in the first half, while junior Amanda Flory made one in the second.

Both teams were close on shots with Ohio Wesleyan holding an 18-16 advantage. Wooster took seven corners to Ohio Wesleyan's six.

Next, the Scots will travel to Kenyon College on Wednesday.
