The College of Wooster women's tennis team was within striking distance of defeating the University of Mount Union – a year after the Purple Raiders swept the Fighting Scots 9-0 – but a pair of three-setters in singles went Mount Union's way in a 6-3 decision for the visitors Wednesday at Wooster's D.J. Hard Memorial Courts.

The match-up between northeast Ohio foes capped the fall for Wooster (0-2), which showed significant improvement in the team's abbreviated season.

The Scots easily prevailed at the top of the doubles lineup on Wednesday, with freshman Rachel Mole and sophomore Catherine Christian teaming for an 8-3 triumph. Sophomore Rose Chiumento and first-year Catherine Boyles pushed their opponents at the No. 2 position, however, Mount Union (1-0) ultimately gained the team point, 8-6, which allowed the Purple Raiders to go ahead 2-1 heading into singles play.

Mole and Christian were both winners again, as the former took a close first set and then rolled in the second for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 winning line at No. 1 singles and the latter dominated her match at No. 2 to the tune of 6-1, 6-0, respectively.

Chiumento, at third singles, and sophomore Kimberly Carter, at No. 4, won the first set in their matches, only to see Mount Union mount comebacks in both to secure the team victory.

The competitive portion of Wooster's 2013-14 season will resume March 1 against Ohio Wesleyan University.
