Several close matches went the way of Otterbein University, as The College of Wooster dropped an 8-1 decision to the visiting Cardinals in non-conference women's tennis action inside the Scot Center on Wednesday.
Wooster's top-two players, Rachel Mole and Catherine Christian, began the match by pushing Otterbein's No. 1 doubles pair to the limit, but ultimately fell 8-6, and unfortunately for the Fighting Scots, that trend carried over into the singles.
Christian picked up a three-set win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, at second singles, and Mole and Kimberly Carter nearly did the same at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively. Mole, a first-year playing at the top of the lineup, split the first two sets, 5-7 and 6-3, then went all the way to a third-set tiebreaker, with Otterbein's Sammi Kruger edging her out 7-5.
Carter also played an extremely tight match, finishing on the short end of a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 line. Noteworthy, Rose Chiumento nearly pushed her foe at third singles to a third set in a 6-1, 6-4 setback.
Wooster will head out to Hilton Head Island, S.C., in a few days where it will play five matches over spring break.
