If its performance at this weekend's Oberlin Invitational is any indication, The College of Wooster women's tennis team has a lot to be excited about entering the 2014-15 season, as the Fighting Scots went 10-6 in their singles matches and 7-5 in doubles at the three-day event at Oberlin, Ohio, with both veterans and newcomers alike contributing towards their success.

Wooster had eight different players compete in two singles matches apiece, with three posting perfect 2-0 records. One of them was Catherine Christian, who played mostly at No. 2 singles last year, as she took down opponents from John Carroll University (6-1, 6-1) and Otterbein University (7-6, 6-2) rather decisively.

Another Scot to win both of her singles matches was Elizabeth Brewington, who only competed in seven singles matches last season as a first-year. Brewington's victories came against Baldwin Wallace University (6-2, 6-1) and Ohio Northern University (6-4, 6-1).

Finally, newcomer Morgan Wagers had a strong collegiate debut, as she needed just two sets to dispose of her challengers from Baldwin-Wallace (6-1, 6-1) and Juniata College (6-4, 6-2).

Four others went 1-1 in singles action, including last year's No. 1 singles player Rachel Molé, who saw both of her matches go to three sets. Molé edged out her Case Western Reserve University foe by set scores of 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8), but came up short in another marathon match against John Carroll – 2-6, 6-2, 0-1 (8-10).

Catherine Boyles joined freshman Kate Connors and Bonnie Salmeron as the other Scots to win singles matches at the Invitational.

Over in doubles, a new pairing of Rose Chiumento and first-year Wagers made a splash by going 3-0, while last year's all-North Coast Athletic Conference duo of Molé and Christian went 2-1 against stiff competition. Other teams that recorded wins were Boyles/Brewington and Connors/Salmeron.

The Scots will send some of their top athletes to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships next weekend, before the traditional part of their schedule begins on Sept. 26.
