In its first dual match of the 2014-15 season, The College of Wooster women's tennis team came up on the short end of three close matches during an eventual 6-3 setback to the University of Mount Union at Alliance, Ohio, on Friday.
Wooster was narrowly edged in two of the three doubles matches, slipping into a 3-0 hole. At the top of the lineup, Rachel Molé and Catherine Christian won five games before succumbing 8-5, while the No. 3 team of Catherine Boyles and Elizabeth Brewington dropped a tough 8-4 decision.
Highlighting the singles action for the Fighting Scots, first-year Bonnie Salmeron earned a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6 in her collegiate debut. Chrisitan and Rose Chiumento scored hard-fought wins at the second (4-6, 6-0, 10-4) and third (6-3, 3-6, 11-9) positions, respectively. Boyles wasn't as fortunate at fourth singles, as she lost a third-set super tiebreaker (10-7) after splitting the first two sets 6-7, 6-0.
Wooster will wrap up its fall season by hosting a tri-match with Westminster (Pa.) College and Capital University on Oct. 18.
