The College of Wooster was very competitive at the top of the singles lineup against nationally-ranked Oberlin College, and Elizabeth Brewington notched a victory at the sixth-spot, but ultimately, the Yeowomen were too much, as they dropped the Fighting Scots by an 8-1 count on Wednesday evening in North Coast Athletic Conference East Division action at the Heisman Field House in Oberlin, Ohio.

Oberlin (8-9, 1-0 NCAC East) entered the contest ranked No. 36 in NCAA Div. III and ninth in the Central Region according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.

The challenging opponent gave the Scots (4-11, 0-1 NCAC East) the opportunity to show that their top singles players can hang with some of the best around. Both Catherine Christian and Rachel Molé gave their counterparts a run for their money at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Christian played against Grace Porter, the 17th ranked player in the region, and pushed her to a third-set super tiebreaker. Wooster's junior standout bounced back from a tough 6-0 setback in the opener to take the second set decisively, 6-2. She was then edged out 10-6 in the tiebreaker.

Molé also took her opponent to a third-set super tiebreaker. She rattled off a 6-3 victory in the first set, but had the roles reversed in the second set (6-1), before dropping the tiebreaker 10-5.

With all eyes on No. 6 singles, since it was the last match to finish, Brewington triumphed by set scores of 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) to help Wooster avoid the sweep and go home on a high note.

Earlier, the Scots also had a closely-contested match at the second doubles spot, where Molé and Catherine Boyles came up just short, 8-5.

Next, Wooster hosts Taylor (Ind.) University (8-8), an NAIA program, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
