Wooster Falls in Tri-Match to Centre, Nationally-Ranked DePauw

Elizabeth Brewington

The College of Wooster women's tennis team had a strong start on Saturday, but the early doubles momentum did not translate over to singles play, as the Fighting Scots dropped a pair of Saturday afternoon matches to Centre College (7-2) and nationally-ranked DePauw University (9-0) at Greencastle, Ind.

Wooster (1-3) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead over Centre (3-2) at the end of doubles in the day's first match.

Rachel Molé and Bonnie Salmeron put the Scots on the board with an 8-3 win in the No. 3 position.

Later, at No. 2 doubles, Catherine Christian and Elizabeth Brewington won a 9-8 (8-6) thriller over the Colonel's Courtney DeLong and Casey Blair. Of note, the win was Christian's 36th for her career in doubles play, moving the senior into a tie for sixth with Liz Richards in the College annals.

Centre rallied to sweep the ensuing six singles points, but there were several tightly contested first sets. In the fourth position, Brewington was able to win four games in the opening set, and went on to win four more in the second set. Additionally both Christian and Morgan Wagers won three games in their first singles sets.

Wooster also fought hard in singles play against No. 14 DePauw (2-0) with Christian winning three games in the first set against regionally-ranked Maddie Lee, and Wagers winning three games as well in the first set in the second position.

Wooster returns to action with a dual match against Otterbein University (2-1) at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
