Closely Contested Doubles Action Tilts Cardinals' Way as Wooster Falls in Spring Opener

The College of Wooster women's tennis team opened its 2017 spring slate against Otterbein University, falling 7-2 to the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at the Scot Center indoor tennis courts.

In doubles action, all three matches were tightly contested, with each decision separated by just one break. Otterbein (2-1) took all three points, with the duo of Rylie Markle and Makayla Sutter taking down senior Rachel Molé and junior Morgan Wagers, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot. Playing No. 2 doubles for the Fighting Scots were senior Elizabeth Brewington and first-year Joy Li, who fell 9-7, while junior Bonnie Salmeron and first-year Shannon Sertz lost by the same count in the number three position.

First-year Joy Li won at No. 2 singles, taking down her opponent in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

In singles play, Wooster's Li and Shannon Sertz won at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Li took down Sutter in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, while Sertz went the distance, defeating Megan Stuteville 10-6 in a third set super tiebreaker after dropping the opener, 2-6, before winning the second set, 7-6 (1).

Clinching the match for the Cardinals was Markle, who topped Molé, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot. Wagers battled through three sets against Sophie Allen in the No. 3 position, with Wagers bouncing back from a 4-6 first set, switching the scoreline in the second before losing, 10-8, in the super tiebreaker.

At the No. 4 and 5 spots, Salmeron and Brewing each fell in straight sets.

Wooster returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, in a doubleheader at Greencastle, Ind. against Centre College and No. 25 DePauw University at 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
