Scots Open Spring Trip with Pair of Wins, Keyed by 6-0 Mark in Doubles

Dora Mase
Shannon Sertz

The College of Wooster women's tennis team carried over its strong outing from its last post-spring break match and parlayed that into a pair of wins at Hilton Head Island, S.C. as the Fighting Scots captured a 5-4 win over Concordia University (Wis.) on Tuesday and topped Webster University 7-2 on Friday afternoon.

In Wooster's (4-3) Southern opener, the Scots' doubles success proved to be a big key in the win as the Black & Gold won all three flights. Senior Elizabeth Brewington and first-year Joy Li put the Scots on the board with an 8-3 win out of the middle flight before senior Rachel Molé and junior Morgan Wagers capped off their match with an 8-4 win. Senior Dora Mase and first-year Shannon Sertz took a tightly-contested 9-7 decision at the third flight.

Later, Sertz was a crucial component in the 5-4 win as the outcome of the match came down to her flight. The first-year topped Concordia's (10-4) Emma Sievers 6-1, 7-6 (5) to clinch the match after Li brought the Scots within one point of clinching the win with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph out of the No. 2 position.

Against Webster, Wooster swept the three doubles points for the third straight match. The combination of Brewington and Li put together another steallar outing, this time winning 8-1, while Sertz and Mase and Molé and Wagers backed the Scots' middle flight up with 8-3 and 8-5 wins.

In singles play, Molé and Wagers won by identical 6-1, 6-1 counts to quickly clinch the match while Mase dropped one game during her impressive 6-1, 6-0 win out of the No. 6 flight.

Sertz rounded out the winners, and similar to Tuesday's match, she pulled through in the second-set tiebreaker to win her match 6-1, 7-6 (10-8).

Notable, Wooster's three-match win streak is a first for the program since the Scots won their first three spring break trip matches in 2013.

Wooster's back in action on Monday against Saint Olaf College (2-3) in a noon match.
